We headed to the coast with the children during the May half-term, and by popular demand, the 2p slot machines were the highlight of the day.

So what does a child normally do with a 2p slot machine?

Change up £1, and have 50 coins to play with. Most of the time, they’ll play until they run out, and £1 might last 10 minutes.

BUT THIS TIME….

That £1 lasted about 30 minutes! That specific blinkin’ 2p machine kept paying out, and paying out, and paying out.

Mr V and I kept looking at each other, rolling our eyes, waiting for the little V’s to run out of cash, so we could go for a coffee. And of course, eventually it did, and off we went.

It’s not the same in business life is it?

The more you invest in staff…. marketing…. sales…. accountants…. the more money you eventually expect to get back – you don’t keep investing waiting for it all to disappear!

And I’m often asked the question….

“HOW MUCH MONEY SHOULD I SPEND ON MY MARKETING?”

Hmmm. It depends on your business really… some say 10% of turnover, some will say a bit more, or a bit less. But let me ask you this…

IF THE MONEY YOU PUT INTO MARKETING ALWAYS GAVE YOU A RETURN ON INVESTMENT… WOULD YOU REALLY CAP THE SPEND?

Marketing shouldn’t be like the 2p slot machines. Once you have a good system in place, you’ll know that for every £1 you put in, you get £2 back out…. so you can continue to invest and invest and increase your return on investment.

BUT HERE’S THE THING…

If you are not yet experiencing this successful “marketing machine” and you are spending money on your Marketing, then THINGS MUST CHANGE.
